Apollonia

The center

Apollonia is the capital of Sifnos, located in the center of the island. It is practically merged with the neighbor villages of Artemonas and Ano Petali. During the day Apollonia is a quiet place but in the evening it gets very busy and all restaurants, cafes, bars and shop open for visitors (most of them are closed until late afternoon).

Apollonia is a good choice for accommodation because all roads going to the north or south of the island pass through it, but yet if you have a car, own or rented, you should keep in mind that many of the streets are accessible for pedestrians only - there are steps and narrow sections. There is a large municipal parking space very close to the center and to the few traditional bakeries which work from early morning, offering various pastry, snacks and local desserts. The main commercial street of Apollonia is known as "To Steno" and it is a long and narrow alley full of boutique shops, cozy restaurants, bars, confectioneries and a few dazzling white churches. The architecture is typical for the Cyclades islands, with the white-blue domination, and in the evenings tourists from all parts of the island come here for a walk and dinner, as well as for shopping - most of the shops sell hand-made souvenirs, clothes and bags.

From Apollonia you can reach the more traditional village of Artemonas on foot as you follow a cobbled path between the houses, and the hikes takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Kastro, the most popular landmark of Sifnos, is 2 km away from Apollonia.
