Ancient Olympia

The Philippeion

Ancient Olympia is an archeological complex located in west Peloponnese, near the village if Olympia and the town of Pyrgos. It is one of the most significant sites left from antiquity and it includes ruins of more than 70 temples and sanctuaries.

Ancient Olympia is known as the place where the Ancient Olympic Games were held every four years, as they were first initiated in 8 century BC. Today, the archeological site covers a large open-air area with ruins and the big Museum of the History of the Olympic Games of Antiquity with interesting artifacts. Among the ruins you can see the ancient Stadium, the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Zeus (this was the place where the greatest sacrifices were made), the Palestra, the Phillipeion, the Gymnasion, etc. Signboards with information are provided for each sanctuary.

The archeological site is located in the outskirts of the modern village of Olympia and parking lot is provided. Entrance fee is approximately EUR 12 per adult (by 2018).
