Ammoudara

Sunbeds, parasols and blue sea

Ammoudara is a suburb in the beach area of Heraklion Town which spreads on a 7 km long beach west of the town. Since it is very large, some parts of the beach are known under other names like Xeropotamos, Agios Dimitrios, Agia Marina, or Gazi - the name of a village 2 km away from the sea. Mind that there is one more Ammoudara beach on Crete but it is near Agios Nikolaos, Lasithi region, so both are sometimes confused.

Ammoudara is the largest and most developed resort of Heraklion. It consists mainly of hotels, apartments to rent, restaurants, cafes, fast food and shops for tourists. The largest hotel complexes are at the beachfront and there are numerous beach bars, as well as plenty of free space. Water sports are available, especially windsurf because of the north winds which often blow here. The beach is entirely sandy but at some places there are tiny pebbles around the shore.

There are regular buses to Heraklion Town and from the town port various boat trips are offered, including to the nearby islet of Dia or day trips to the Cycladic island of Santorini.
