Agios Nikolaos

Narrow street between the village houses

Agios Nikolaos is located in the northeastern part of Sithonia, in the inner part of the peninsula. It is about 110 km from Thessaloniki.

The village is old and has existed since prehistoric times. In the past it was known under the names Furnia and Manites and was conquered and destroyed several times. There are preserved old houses from 19 century. The surrounding area has remnants of the old fortress wall and tower. Once the place was famous for its craftsmen and builders but now its inhabitants are specialized in the production of tsipouro (a kind of Greek brandy) and honey.

The permanent population today is about 2000 people, and in Agios Nikolaos and its region you can find everything you need for a holiday. Even if you are not accommodated in the village itself, you should visit it, take a walk along the narrow streets to see the old houses and drink coffee in one of the small cafes.

Agios Nikolaos is not on the coastline but the sea is nearby and you have a choice of secluded beaches or such with tavernas and entertainment for visitors. The closest beach is Trani Ammouda - 3.5 km away.

Excursions to Mount Athos depart from the port of Agios Nikolaos - Ormos Panagias, located 5 km away.
