Agios Mattheos (also Agios Matthaios) is an old and a relatively large inland village in the south part of
Corfu, close to
Paramonas beach (3 km). Other beaches nearby are
Prasoudi (6 km) and
Chalikounas lagoon with lake Korission (7 km).
Agios Mattheos is very authentic and away from the tourist bustle because it is far from the seaside and the livelier resorts in the east and north part of the island. Narrow alleys cross the village between the colorful houses and small churches, some of them accessible on foot only. Around the small square there are cafes and family run tavernas, as well as small super markets. The houses are in the Venetian style architecture and a walk in Agios Mattheos will make you feel almost like in the back streets of Corfu old town. There are no big hotels here, only holiday homes and small complexes of rooms and apartments to rent.
In the outskirts of the village you can visit a working olive mill and buy pure premium olive oil. The resorts of
Moraitika and Messongi are 8 km away, and the center of
Corfu Town is at a distance of 23 km.
