Agios Kyprianos

Hamlet with stone houses by the sea

Agios Kyprianos is a small seaside village on the east shore of Mani, Peloponnese. Unlike other Mani villages, it lacks tower like houses, maybe due to the fact that Maniots built their homes away from the sea and on high ground. Most of the buildings are relatively new, but still built from stone and with castle like architecture. Many of the houses are holiday homes and some can be rented during the summer season.

Agios Kyprianos is used as harbor from all nearby villages and there are small fishing boats around the beach. The beach is small and covered with smooth pebbles and the water is crystal clear with emerald color. In old times, it was the place from which rosso antico marble (meaning ”ancient red” and also known as rosso antico Tenaron) was transported from the Lagia marble quarries. This Tenaron marble can be seen in the Treasury of Atreus at Mycenae, the Westminster Cathedral and a single column can be seen in a old church in Alika (village on the west shore of Mani).

The main road goes above the village and it is uncommon for travelers to pass by unless they are going to Ampelos Beach (pronounced Abelos Beach).
