Agios Ioannis Kastri

The famous Mamma Mia church

After the Mamma Mia! movie, one small church on the top of a rock has gained so much popularity that some people come to Skopelos just to see it (or to take a photo in front of it). This is the church Agios Ioannis Kastri, perched on a high cliff in the sea and accessible via 110 steps, carved in the rock and protected with a fence. The church is very small and you will find it open anytime. The church yard offers panoramic view of Skopelos seaside, the island of Alonnisos and the homonymous beach of Agios Ioannis which is very close.

The road to Agios Ioannis Kastri starts in the outskirts of Glossa and though it is just 7 km, it takes more than expected to reach because the road is narrow and has hairpin turns here and there, and because there are some breathtaking views on the way which may cause you to stop and have a look. The road ends just below the rock where there is also a cafeteria working only in the summer.
