Castle of Agia Mavra

The castle walls opposite Amoglossa

The castle of Agia Mavra, also known as Santa Maura, is the most significant historical sight on Lefkada, and one of the few sightseeing spots on the island which are not related to nature. It is located at the entrance of the island and the bridge which connects it to mainland Greece. Actually, you will pass just by its walls and there is no chance to miss it.

Agia Mavra was originally built in 1300 by a Frankish ruler but in 16 century it was rebuilt by the Venetians who called the entire island Santa Maura after the name of the castle. The outer walls are very well preserved but from the inner part of the fortress there is not much to see, except for the small church of Agia Mavra and ruins of buildings. The castle is surrounded by the lagoons which have formed in this part of Lefkada and it has views over Lefkada Town and the beaches around.

The castle is open to visitors every day until 3 pm, except Mondays (this applies to almost all castles and fortresses in Greece which have visiting hours).
