Acropolis of Kavala

The round tower

The Acropolis of Kavala occupies the top of the rocky Panagia headland and overlooks the city harbor. The castle was built in the first part of 15th century on the ruins of older Byzantine acropolis. The castle consists of defensive walls, food and weapons depot building (later used as prison), water cistern, soldier headquarters and big round tower preserved from the original Byzantine fortifications. The fortifications were supplied with water from another Kavala landmark - the Kamares Medieval Aqueduct. Additional walls guard the old town and connect with the castle on its north-west side.

The best view of the Acropolis is from the city port. Near the fishing boats start some of the narrow streets of the Old Тown of Kavala which lead up the hill to the castle. Cobbled pathways, old houses, historical buildings, tavernas and much more will fascinate the curious tourists along their path to Panagia hilltop. Once inside the castle there is cafe and open-air theater, and the top of the Byzantine tower offers splendid view of Kavala and the sea.

The Old town is not suitable for visit by car - the streets are narrow and there are almost no free parking spaces. The most convenient parking is next to the port and right under the Imaret and you can leave your car there for very affordable price. Moreover, a small land train departs from the port and circles the old town every hour or two.
