Monastery of Varlaam

The Varlaam Monastery the second largest monastery of the Meteora group, after the Great Meteoron. It is considered that the name comes from a hermit called Varlaam who built a small chapel on the top of the rock in 14th century but the monastery was established in 16th century by two monks. Today the place is inhabited by 8 monks who live there all year round.

Varlaam Monastery is accessed through a small bridge and winding steps carved in the rock. Visiting hours are from 9:00 to 16:00 and the monastery is closed for visitors on Fridays.
