Toroni

Toroni

Toroni is a small village located in a bay on the southwest coast of Sithonia, between Neos Marmaras and Porto Koufo. According to the legends, Toroni was the name of the wife of Proteus, son of Poseidon.

Toroni is a place for relaxing holidays and it is lively only in the summer. There is no square or pedestrian area - the taverns and cafes are concentrated along the promenade, and the hotels are scattered all over the village. The beach of Toroni is long and wide, covered with coarse sand and pebbles. The sea is calm and clean but the sea bottom quickly gets deep around the shore, so it is not the best place for toddlers. A few kilometers to the north you will find the beaches of Destenika and Tristinika.

Evidences show that the site was inhabited since the Neolithic Era and in the past wit as an important city with its own currency. The gulf between Kassandra and Sithonia bears the same name - Toroneos. Today in Toroni you can see remains of the wall of a castle and a small Christian church. Near the village archaeological excavations show a cemetery with 134 tombs dating back to the Iron Age.
