Pyrgos

Pyrgos

Pyrgos (also known as Pyrgos Kallistis) is an old village in the inland of Santorini, built on a hill with view toward the caldera and major part of the island. As it is away from the seaside and the caldera, it is not invaded by tourists and has preserved most of its authentic outlook.

Since 19 century Pyrgos used to be the island`s capital and it had a large Venetian fortress built on the slopes of the hill. Nowadays, you can still see ruins of the fortress between the houses. Pyrgos has a few cafes and taverns with nice views and souvenir shops. Accommodation is available in a limited number of hotels and guest houses.
