Platanias

Blue sunbeds and parasols at the beach

One may say that Platanias is the prolongation of Agia Marina, which on its side is a prolongation of Kato Stalos and vice versa. They all share the kilometers long beach strip west of Chania Town, and have formed as the liveliest resorts of Chania region with many facilities and night life.

Platanias spreads between Agia Marina and Gerani, separated into old and new part by the main road Chania-Kissamos. The upper and older part of the village, known as Ano Platanias, is built on a small elevation and has mainly houses of local residents and restaurants with sea view. The new part is along the sea, with numerous hotels of all categories and beach bars. The beach has somewhat coarse sand mixed with small pebbles around the shore, and it has all kind of beach facilities plus water sports. Like all north beaches of Crete, though, it is often exposed to wind in the summer.

Platanias also has a small harbor for fishing boats and cruise boats from which daily trips are organized around the north coast, to the nearby islet of Agii Theodori, or to the famous Balos lagoon and Gramvousa island.
