Petralona Cave

Petralona Cave

The Archaeological Museum and Cave of Petralona is located about 35 km southeast of Thessaloniki, 2 km above the village of Petralona, Halkidiki peninsula.

Petralona Cave was discovered by shepherds who heard the sound of running water and dug out the exit. During research, speleologists found many bones of prehistoric people and animals. In the cave a skull of Archanthropus was found, an intermediate species between Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens.

The museum displays the findings from the cave and here you can see the oldest remains of fire - over 1 million years old, ancient bone and stone tools found in Nea Triglia in Halkidiki (11 million years old) and other artifacts from the region, other parts of Greece and from Africa.

The central place in the museum is occupied by the ”Mausoleum of Archanthropus” - the skeleton of a 30-year-old male who was a very old human for his time. Visitors can also see the bones of hyenas, lions, roe deer and other animals, human bones, skulls and stone tools made of flint and quartz.
