Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni

The monastery garden

The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni (also just Faneromeni) is located on a hill near the area of Frini, 3 km from Lefkada Town and on the way to Tsoukalades village. Its position reveals a splendid view toward the town, the beach of Agios Ioannis and the lagoons.

The monastery is very old and it had existed before the Ottoman and Venetian rule, but after a fire in 1887 it was rebuilt in its previous state. It is devoted to Virgin Mary who is patron saint of the island and many religious celebrations are held there annually. The monastery hosts an ecclesiastic museum and a small naval museum, and in the garden there is also a primitive zoo with domestic animals and birds. Currently a few monks live there and accept visitors every day, excluding the hours between 2 and 4 pm.
