Komotini
The town of Komotini is the main administrative center and capital of Rhodopi Region. It has a population of approximately 60 000 residents which is increased by the students who attend the Democritus University of Komotini.
Due to its proximity to Turkey, the traditional city architecture is a combination of Greek and Oriental elements which can be seen in the old neighborhood with preserved houses, churches and mosques. The main square is car-free and has plenty of cafes and taverns, as well as a small park. A free public parking lot is available in a special area opposite the town park, next to building of the Byzantine Museum.
Тhe closest beaches to Komitini are those in the area of Fanari and Maronia, at a distance of approximately 30 km.
