Kokkini Hani

Arena beach near the settlement

A former fishing village, today Kokkini Hani is a popular resort on the north coast of Crete, about 15 km away from Heraklion Town center. The place is perfect for families and couples, with a nice sandy beach, plenty of accommodation and food options but lacking the noise and night life of the nearby Malia and Chersonissos. The location of Kokkini Hani is also good to explore the region of Heraklion, as you will have easy access to the main road which goes along the entire north coast.

The beach strip of Kokkini Hani is a few km long, separated into smaller beaches by concrete piers. They are all sandy and with shallow water, though you should keep in mind that the sea is usually rough. All beaches have different names, as the widest one is called Arina and it is in the westernmost part where there are almost no buildings but only a few beach bars. The rest beaches are more narrow, organized with sunbeds and parasols to rent, and around them you can find almost all restaurants and cafes of the village. Kokkini Hani also offers super markets, pharmacies, bakeries and car rental services. The village tends to develop eastwards and has almost reached the beach of Gournes.

About 10 km inward from Kokkini Hani you can visit the traditional village of Episkopi and the cluster of small authentic villages of Galifa, Galipe and Stamni. In the area of Gournes which is just out of Kokkini Hani, you will find the Cretaquarium - one of the largest and most modern aquariums in Europe.
