Ancient Theater

The theater in a sunny day

The Ancient Theater is located in Limenas, the capital of the island, and it is one of the main archeological and historical sights of Thassos. It is part of the entire Ancient City which lies close to the center of the town and includes also the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora.

In order to reach the Ancient Theater, you should follow the signs for it near the Ancient Agora. They will lead you to a coastal path which starts near Limanaki beach, passes by Evreokastro and reaches the theater after a long walk along the coast. The theater is built on a hill above the sea and has a terrific view toward the town port and the sunset. You can even see it from the ferry boat provided you know in which direction to look. The theater is supposed to be built around 5 or 3 century B.C. and was used as a place for gladiator duels and music performances. It can seat approximately 2000 persons and is decorated with marble from the island. Today the residents of Thassos hold local festivals and various cultural events there.
